What exactly does this mean? How do you know when it's time to do it? And is it expensive?

They replace the cone and voice coil of the speaker. You do it when you blow your speaker.

basically you would definately know if it no longer produces sound. However speakers get tired and can loose their form a bit over time, or produce cone rattle if the voicecoil is loose. The first thing you must ask is the speaker I own reconeable and then is it worth it.

The reason I asked was . . .
I have a pair of Rogersound Labs studio monitors. In the '80s these were among the best on the market (or so I've been told). I've used them continuously for 20 years, and they still sound great. But I wonder if a little service could maximize their performance.

If they still sound great, then leave them alone. If one of them starts to go, recone them both so they still match.
