If that is what you have, use it. The most important thing is to get started.
There is not one good sound that works for everybody. That having been said, yes there is a difference. I personally don't like to use DI boxes for recording but that's a preference.
You'll get better answers if you'll take the time to give us more specifics about what you're trying to do.
It is really going to depend on the type of music you are recording. If it's metal with super saturated tones....less noticeable. Clean tones through a really shimmery amp, you might notice a difference with a higher quality DI.
Easiest thing to do is try it and see if you notice it mucking things up.
