RE-20 / PL-10 Difference?

Hi, I was wondering if someone could tell me the difference in sound between a RE20 and a PL10? The PL10 looks like a smaller version of the RE20, I am guessing it doesn't have maybe the bass rolloff or a couple other goodies...

Specifically, would it sound similiar on voice? Does have the same (lack of) proximity effect?

Thanks in advance!

I sold my PL10 a couple of years ago, but since it is a smaller mic it does not have the same low end as an RE20, so they are not going to sound the same on vocals.

Since they are both Dynamic Mics, they are not going to be as hot as Condensers Mics, but you can use that as an advantage if you are doing recordings at home where you might not have total isolation. The RE20 sounds great on Vocals and because it is not as hot as most condensors, you won't have to worry as much picking up background noises that are out of your control. Another plus is that you don't need phantom power to run them.

OK, someone left the following as negative reputation:

"dumb ass, small and lowend are not connected"

What I was getting at was the size of the diaphragm of the mic correlates to the frequency response. The larger the diaphragm the better it will respond with lower frequencies. The same works for speakers. An 18” sup is going to have a better low end than a 6” speaker.

As far as the RE20 and the PL10, there IS a size difference, and a noticeable difference in the frequency response between the two.

I don't think it was very nice of him/her to call you a "dumbass," or to give you the negative rep.

But just so you know ... Despite what would seem logical/reasonable, what you said about the size of the diaphragm and the low end wasn't accurate. What you said about the speaker size is a different phenomenon altogether.

The PL-10 doesn't have the same frequency response on either end, really. The top and bottom aren't as extended. It's a "midrangier" mic more along the lines of an SM-57, only not as peaky. It's got the same variable-D feature (meaning less proximity effect) as the other EV mics, but it doesn't have the same tight pattern.

Think of it as maybe another alternative to something like an sm-57. Not the best, not the worst, good on some things, not as good on others. Don't go out of your way for one, but don't turn it down if you can get one really cheap either.

Isn't it fun to lend credence where none is due?

Boggles my mind why anybody in this place continues to place any stock in some of the rep comments people leave behind..... it may have started out as a good idea, but the way the rep stuff is set up it's a joke.....

Dont take it personally, man, and dont dignify it by explaining or defending yourself from it. People who really care will know that you are trying to help! And they wont dis you for not being perfect...

Oh, I don't take it personally. My thing is if you think I am wrong just post it, and tell me why. I'll admit that I don't know everything, so when I am wrong, I would like to know why so that I can learn.

Somebody left me neg rep on the microphones choice thread which was <studio Projects sucks you dumb ass> which sounds like the same person to me. I guess you aren't supposed to say anything good about Studio Projects. It could be DJL has been resurrected. Maybe it would be a good idea to change the way rep is left by adding who is leaving rep or get rid of it. As Soundchaser59 pointed out rep doesn't mean squat.
