I am hooking some equipment up for home recording and editing. I have a berhringer mixer and would like to do hookup a tascam cassette/cd recorder to it and my computer.
Would rca to xlr be better to use or the rca inputs. And would balanced or unbalanced be better to use.

I think you can just go tape out/in of the console(mixer) but if I'm understanding your question right your wanting to record to cd once you have a mix together right?

Well, the RCA (known as a phono plug in much of the world) is an unbalanced connector anyway) so whichever way you go, you won't be feeding a balanced signal. However, cheap RCA leads tend to use cable little better than bell wire so you might at least get a better cable by going to XLR anyway.

What Behringer mixer do you have? The XLR outputs on most of them are at "professional" levels (i.e. +4dBu) while most things set up with RCA/phono inputs are expecting a signal at -10dBV. If this is the case, it might be more convenient to use the RCA outputs anyway.

I am acually recording live sessions from tape to my computer to edit. Then I have to make a master tape to make copys. My plans are to do live recording to my laptop then edit and make the tape. I would prefer to make cds but the people I am making the tapes for are still using tape players. Also the tapes are reused biweekly. This is all for tape ministry for my church. The mixer is a Behringer XENYX X2442.

We usta do that at our church but we found an online sit to post the sermons for all to enjoy even in house bound situations.

Is it the USB version of the mixer, with the USB connected to the computer? If so, I'll change my previous advice to use the RCA sockets because those mirror the USB input and output which would make what you want to do very confusing.

If you're not using the USB for the computer hookup, just go with the RCAs. However, if you are, get RCA to TRS cables to go from the cassette/CD into Line in 13/14 or 15/16 and feed from the mixer to the cassette/CD from the secondary TRS main outs with a second pair of TRS to RCA.
