I'm guessing this preamp wouldn't be much better, or would it???
On a budget, that will get the job done, but you will most likely eventually grow tired of it and want something better. If you can scrounge up enough pennies to get this one, http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=live/search/detail/base_id/89454, I think you would be happier in the long run. If not, either the ART or Behringer will provide juice for a mic, but don't expect miracles. Good luck.

Ok, how about the preamp you suggested scrubs and an SM57...that would be about the same price as the B2 and the ART.

Better, or no???

Ditch the Nady pop filter. If you need a pop filter, spend the extra fifteen bucks for one with a metal grille. I got one a few weeks ago, and man does it make a difference.

i'd go for that big willz. A little more than my budget allows for, but whatever.

I see it comes with a windscreen, so should I ditch the pop filter altogether?

Make your own pop filter till you come across some extra money panty hose and a coat hanger will get you the same effect. :)

While we're on the subject...

Has anyone tried the AT2020 $99 mic? How is it?

OK, I'll play devil's advocate. For vocals, I think the Behringer mic is better than the SP B1. But I think either the Behringer B1 or B2, SP B1, or SM57 would do great as a first mic.

Ok, I just bought the SP B1 off ebay and I'm ordering the preamp and other crap off musicians friend now. I'm glad I checked here before I made any purchases, and I'm glad I can trust you guys. Thanks :)

I second the vote for the B1 + VTB1 again not the best for vocals but great starter mic - the windscreen is not a good substitute for a pop filter it is too thick, attentuates the high frequencies and makes the mic sound 'boxy'.

Let us know how you like them. And, yeah, you'll still need a pop filter at some point. The pantyhose thing will get you by until you can pick one up. Musician's Friend will occasionally have them for like $10.

Hey, thanks. I figure anything's gotta be better than this. That's my current mic with a million different eq effects to make it halfway listenable.

hey bro if thats u...nice voice...doesnt sound to bad for using a computer mic....i think thats what you said u were using before...the studio projects b1 is a nice mic as well...i think its about the as the b2 from behringer...others insist its better...but there on crack and think they have super ears....good luck with your purchases.

Heck, I like the Samson C03 occasionally. It's a multi-pattern condenser for $99 that SOS gave a near rave review. Although I only use it to mic car explosions :D .

I like your voice ... the SP B1 shouldn't change too much of it but you may find in the future you want to seek out something particularly flattering for your sound. There's a tonne of preamps out there but if you're playing the ebay game you could check the Behringer MIC2200 - it's one of the very few Behringer bits I've used and liked, although I preferred it more as a bass DI to a mic preamp. Worth a try if you can score for peanuts.
