Ramming Speed

A short while ago I upped my Mobo and CPU to a P4 @2.4g. Due to $ constraints, I just used my old 2x256M PC2100 RAM. Everything's been fine so far, but I also haven't pushed things as far as I might soon want to. You know, lotsa 24 96 tracks with lotsa realtime FX. I was curious as to how big of a performance boost 800MHz buss speed RAM might give.

I'm also curious about the perfomance benefit of using ram in a "dual channel" set up. That's what I have now. But what if I replace my 2x256 PC2100 RAM in dual-channel with a single stick of 512 PC3200 RAM, hoping to buy another stick in the not to distant future?

Replacing the memory with PC3200 will benefit your computer primarily depends on whether your motherboard supports an 800MHz memory bus or not.
If it does, then it's still a question if you'll notice it considerably.

Recording is not like for instance gaming where the amount of frames per second is everything and more fps = better.

With recording, it's more like it either works or not. It's not like your mix will sound better or your computer will run much smoother if the CPU or the memory bus is loaded at 10% instead of 20%.

Today's computers have a lot of headroom, more than a lot of people realize.

My opinion is that you just stick with what you got until you really bump into some limitations. Your current setup may well get you further than you expect now.
By the time you really notice a lack of resources, you'll probably be checking out Pentiums V.

But YMMV.

Yeah, It Does.

That was kind of my thinking too. I was just thinking ahead a bit on if I ran into problems or had a little extra cash (Ha!). Just kind of curious too.
