GO PACKERS!
I was wondering if I could squeak a little more performance out of my rig cheaply to delay the inevitable upgrade.
I have a PIII 933
ASUS cusl2 mobo
512 megs ram
Windows XP

Running Sonar2,Kompakt,Ozone and various lesser plugs.
I'm really lovin' Kompakt but it's giving me a performance hit that I can still work around but could use a little breathing room.

Can you install more than 512 on a PIII?
Can you use any combination of sticks as long as you've got slots?
Kompakt comes with adjustable settings pertaining to the amount of ram you have installed, would it be a fair assumption that more than 512 will help my performance?

Any other thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

THANKS!

I think so. But it depends highly on your motherboard. Doesen't the manual tell you the limit?

No, this motherboard has a i815 chipset and does not support more than 512 MB

No, A motherboard with a i815 chipset supports up to 2 sticks of PC133 ram (that's what you need for your PIII933), if you put in a third, the front side bus drops to 100 MHz.

Spending money on a PIII based machine is a waste anyway, at least for recording purposes.
Take a deep breath.... and buy or build a new computer, either AMD or Intel.

So who's gonna tell the wife and kids that there'll be no Christmas this year?

Thanks,I thought I had heard or read something to the effect of what you said.

I understand that Christiaan is trying to say that your performance with a PIV will be much better and that you maybe spend your money on a new PC instead of upgrading your current.

HE may be right, but sometimes we have to use the means we have. And I can say I mixed some decent stuff on my PIII! It is not ideal, but it surely works, especially with you 512 RAM you would be able to do some creative work. I can't see any options for changing your performance though without upgrading.

I agree that a PIII can be a workable platform. I took my first steps with a celeron 466/128mb myself. It's just that acidrock himself stated that for his purposes it's running short.
Since his current computer doesn't have any upgrade paths worth mentioning, the only step up is a new computer.

You guys are both right,I just basically wanted to weigh my options.A new computer is inevitable, but I can still work with what I've got for now.
Native instruments seems to be admiting that Kompakt is not as efficient as it should be and says there's a patch on the way to make things a little more CPU friendly,so this should help.

LATER!
