I was just checking the minimum requirements for Wavelab Essential (which I have). It needs 512 worth of Ram... I'm running with 480 fine... Just noticed this... So, I'm fine with this, right?

I guess I don't need the full 512mb of ram???

No probs... ?

Just looking to clarify.

usually you can go a little lower than the minimal specs, but it is recommended that you run that minimum. For one, it seems that your video card is sharing your ram, so hence the 480 out of 512. Then on top of that, windows will be taking up at least 256 or higher. It will work fine now, but when you start using extensive plug-ins, you'll see why they want 512mb dedicated for waves. I suggest running at LEAST 1gb for near optimal settings

SOME RAM is cheap....my ram costed me $299 when I got it. My newest set of ram cost about $269 both were for 2GB, and pretty cheap................................... ;)

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! I paid $150 for a mobo, processor, and a gig!

wow what did you get????

my system cost me a little over $3500. The memory I run is the newer DDR2 800 from OCZ (OCZ FlexXLC Edition) it went up since then to now $279 with rebates down to $240. Pretty fast memory actually... I'm going to be over clocking them to whatever max level OCZ allows.

That's cool. I remember trying to scrape a couple of grand together for a Compu-Add 286 with 1MB and 10MB HDD. It didn't take long for me to figure out that for me, since I don't run any intensive applications anyway, the depreciation on a screamer is an unnecesary financial hit.

What do plugin's have to do with RAM? Each plugin might take 1 or 2MB of RAM. You can only run 6 plugin's in Wavelab. Thus, you need AT MOST about 12MB of RAM.

Now, if you want to talk CPU cycles, THEN more is good!

I used to run Wavelab quite successfully with 128MB of RAM. No problems. That was under Windows 2000, Wavelab 3.

Things seem to be working fine for me in Wavelab... No issues... Just noticed that they suggest 512mb on their website. I don't normally use more than 3 VSTs in wavelab... mostly just a comp and a limiter, so I guess I'm good to go with the 480 that's available on my computer.

The only time that you really have to worry about RAM is using VSTi's (Virtual Instruments) that load WAV samples into memory.

Otherwise, CPU is what you need to be concerned about. RAM is also kind of important in multi-track recording where buffers are used to store track's audio and summed audio. But even for that you don't need as much as most programs suggest.

When mastering a single, stereo audio file, RAM isn't something to be concerned about.
