You might get an answer if you included what your current hardware is now.

hehe sorry
right now i have: pentium three 600mhz, 10 GB HDD of which 60% is free, 64 mgs of RAM & a crappy sound card that came with the pc

what else should i have displayed?
how do i tell what rpm's my HDD is?

thanks,
luke

get either 64 or 128 mb Ram unless you got $$ to spare....you wont need another HardDrive unless you need the storage...but you have a burner so thats better storage anyway....

I would say go out and buy at least another 128 meg DIMM - RAM is sold in chip sizes of 64, 128, or 256. Another 128 would give you 192 which is fine to get going.

There are advantages to having a seperate hard drive to record your audio files to. However your 10 gig will certainly work for starters as you learn the process.

Do a search on this site and you will find lots of info. On the other hand, the Search functions doesnt always work well, so just browse backwards if your seach turns up empty.

You didn't say what your budget was, but both RAM and hard drives are cheaper per meg right now than they have ever been. So its a good time to buy.

The only sure way to tell how fast your hard drive is SUPPOSED to be is open up the PC, get the hard drive model number, and look it up on the web.

You can also get the model number by watching the hard drive detection while the machine is booting....might save some trouble.

thanks guys,
umm well i am probably gonna buy 256 megs RAM
my budget is about 5000 Rand ( our crappy rand here in south africaisnt doing so well against the dollar & pound :( ) its about 8 rand to a dollar now :(

of that money i am gonna be spending R2600 on the steinberg project pack- just to get me going for a while with a sound card & i think the ram will cost me about 1000 with installation.
with some of whats left over i am gonna use to get some decent cables, etc

& with the money left over i will have to save up an additional R1500 for the new vestax pdx2000 turntable that has caught my eye :)

again thanks guys for all the help :)
it's much appreciated by this pc caveman :)
