Ram or Processor Issues?

hi I am new to the forum. It is very informative. I do have a question. I am currently running Adobe Audition 3 on a laptop, and when i load up a lot of Plug ins, i start to get lag in the computer and it starts to freeze up sometimes, so I assume it is choking the system. i am running windows vista, with 4GB of Ram, and 1.7Ghz Processor. The question is is my processor fast enough for this or do I need a faster one, or is it the ram?

Thanks

instinct says cpu, but tell us more about it.
is it pentium4, dual core, core2duo ?

what speeds the ram? 667?800?1066?

you should open up task manager and look at the statistics when you're maxing out your computer.

it will tell you for fact whether its your cpu or your ram.

A lot depends on the number of tracks, the number of plugs and the type of plugs. Reverb plugs use a lot fo CPU resources. Are you using more than once instance of reverb? Also, laptops usually have only one physical hard drive, so access to the read/write heads are limited. This affects the total number of tracks you can have.

If you have a multi-core cpu, does AA3 take advantage of that or does everything run on one core?

+1 for hard drive speeds being a possible problem. task manager should tell you this too.

i've said it a bunch of times on here, but i replaced a 5400rpm drive with an intel ssd a while ago..

i will NEVER EVER go back...it's genuinely like a new laptop.

i kept the old drive as a system clone..
had to call on it a while ago and none of my current (ssd recorded) audio sessions would actually playback from it!

The problem is with your plug-ins. There is a freeze track option when you have the effects showing on the tracks. Check out the link below :-) It should completely solve your issue.

Adobe Audition 3.0

You have enough ram, and the processor is adequate, although a dual or quad core would be extremely effective. And windows xp crushes windows vista on production performance.

These guys are right about your hardware too. Your hard drive, slower ram speed and moderately low watt power supply will only get you so far before you need the power of a desktop with hard drives spinning at 10,000rpm

processor and ram

Hi all,

Thanks so much for the info.Very helpful. As far as the freeze effect in Adobe Audition, I use it on my tracks, but it still begins to bog down some so I'm assuming I need a faster processor. I am using an AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core processor. But it only 1.70 ghz, so I think I need something with 2ghz or more.

Thanks again

Wayne

Oh boy. You must be having hardware issues then. I can use a single core with 1gb of ram and not have a glitch when all the tracks are frozen. And sometimes I have 20 tracks. But then again we overclock our hardware so much, I'm surprised we didn't suck the life out of the processor yet.

Well I'm not sure i do have other things running on my computer. This computer is not just dedicated to recording. It is a computer my wife and I use so there might be some other things sucking up the processor. I had Adobe running earlier this evening and I also went and had my windows task manager running to see what was going on. When i loaded up some tracks and began to use some VST effects on them, I noticed when my fan kicked on, my CPU was up to almost 100 and the audio began to chop up. My memory was only at 2.10 GB so i am sure the CPU is not fast enough for what I.m trying to do, unless there is a way to speed up my processor without hurting my computer!
