Does a radio station track everything they play? Do they make a "hard copy" of the list?? Do they keep records??

I am excluding college radio and anything similiar/small. Specifically I am interested in NPR-type classical radio stuff. Most of them have very detailed lists that are published the day after or possibly the day before ( published on the net). Can they legally sneak in songs and not keep track of that??

I think they have to....these are the things I've heard about it but it would be great if a radio person could confirm (in Canada):
- CRTC mandates a certain percentage be Canadian Content so they would need to plan which songs to play.
- Someone at the station (Program Manager?) decides which songs to play and passes that list to the DJ/engineer so a list would exist.
- Every time you play a song, the songwriter (and possibly others like performers?) are supposed to get paid for it.
- They would need to report which songs they played and send the money to the proper authorities so they could pass it along to the songwriter.
- So there should be a list somewhere .......

There may be another way:

ASCAP may monitor stations. I read that they monitor 6000 hours of radio play and base it on that. It seems very unfair and definitely would help the big boys a lot more than the lil guy.

Thanks for the bump Gerry. Bump... :D

I've been worrying about this too lately.
I've been submitting to small radiostations for a while now, and have recieved some airplay, but I just now registered my album with ASCAP.

I'll tell you if the checks start rolling in.

I just applied for ASCAP as well.

Its not so much a financial question, I want to find out if people have been lying to me. Methinks they are.
