radio interferance

I sometimes use an old 4channel powered mixer. The other day it was getting a local radio station coming thru. That's never happened with it before. I don't have it grounded with the terminal on the back but I touched a wire from that terminal to the rack without any good results. Any advice? Maybe my temporary ground wasn't a good one?

It could be a cable acting as an antenna, too. If you get the problem again, unplug the input cables first, see if it goes away. If its still there, check the output (to the amp or speakers) cables.

Standard Operating Procedure for noise:

1. Split the audio chain as close to halfway as possible.

2. Assess. Is the noise upstream or downstream from the break?

3. Rinse and repeat at the relevant quarter point in the chain.

4. Isolate the noise source to one piece of gear or cable, by temp replacement.

5. Weigh noise vs noiseless cost.

Sometimes you can defeat problematic noise, effectively, by altering your gain structure. I have a pair of Lexi MX200s that make noisy AF preamps, but stay acceptibly quiet driven with a hot send.
