I have been getting a bit of excessive noise from my effects module in the rack. Could it be because it is mounted just above the monitor amp?

Is there certain gear that should not be mounted near others?

Ahhh it's nice to be back and asking dumb questions again! :D

I always space my rack gear at least one space apart. But thats more for heat and vent reasons. I wager that any piece of gear worth the metal its made of wont pick up noise from other units in its own right. But the quality of your cables is going to have a hand in this issue. One poorly shielded cable or a less than par solder joint will pick up signals better than NASA. Also if you are using after market power supplies (wall warts) on some of your gear, it could be messing up the show.

Even, you'd lose that bet. Preamps in particular are prone to picking up transformer hum from other amps and power conditioners. You have to experiment, but putting any amp in an adjacent rack space to another amp is usually bad, and many of the user's manuals will tell you that. I used to have a DBX386 next to a Joemeek twinQcs, and I can tell you the hum was brutal! I bought another rack.- Richie

I have alot of Alesis products in the rack and almost everyone has that damn little wall wart. They are the original ALesis WalWarts.

I am getting alot of hum from the QuadraVerb and it is mounted just above the RA100 and just below a D4 and (shudder) 3630.

i have had problems sometimes with my quadraverb too....you have to keep the powersupply away from audio cables and other powersupplies. but it depends, because i moved my studio to a new building and i dont have any problems now.

on a side note, does there seem to be a problem with alesis wall warts? i keep blowing them up. i have had 3 or 4 just stop working on me. what gives?

I found that with wal warts it is best to not have power going to them constately. Cut the power to the strip that they are plugged into instead of just shutting off the power at the module.

IE. when you shut down your Quadraverb also shut the power strip off so the wall wart doesn't have power going to it. I have had some of mine for 6 years and they are still working.

Hmm...RA100 I had one and it hummed in a rack all by itself...No joke!!

my QV doesn't hum. I usually try to not to put important stuff near power amps. Go a power strip or patch bay, put it near that..if you can. It could help...then again it might not.

Ok, here's what you do. take the number of gear pieces you want in the rack and factorial that. You have that many different configurations in the rack, try them all and figure out which one is best :D
