rack gear question?

So I am looking into getting a Presonus channel strip and maybe some mic preamps, comps, limiters and such, how do I hook it all up, I have been using all digital until now. Say I have a Focusrite pro40, and outboard gear, do I run the channel strip outs to mic xlr's? or what, be very descriptive please, the more detail the better.

A channel strip is already a mic preamp, compressor and EQ so its output is always a line. So you will need to connect its line output using 1/4 jack to your Focusrite Pro40 Line Input. You do not need the mic pres on your Pro40.
Mic -> Channel Strip (line output) -> (line input) Pro40 -> Firewire -> PC

Mic or other source-> channel strip -> interface. Depending on the interface you could also probably take the output of an extra channel and use it as a send and return with the outboard gear.
