R8 tape speed. wont play

Fostex R8 all functions work except play. will fast forward or rewind at play speed if i hold down the button, so tape counter works. when i hit play the reels lock up, or if I adjust tape tension it plays way too fast..... any Ideas?
 
Are you using old used tape? Bad tape with "sticky shed" will cause a machine to run slow or stop. Nearly all older tapes made before 1994 can break down and cause this problem. Clean the tape path and heads with 90% alcohol or higher. Try a brand new tape before you do anything else.

fostex r8 tape tension

Hi,

I wonder if you can help me. I've had trouble free service from my r8 until about one month ago. I had not used my r8 for about 6 months, but when I went to use it the tape seems to shed lots of oxide and it tend to give a "screech" when starting. Also I've notice that the tape starts quite slowly for the 1st second or so . I've come to the conclusion that the tape tension needs to be reduced, but I don't know how to do this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!

It sounds like you are using very old tape and need to try a new one.
Also clean the whole tape path before you play any more tapes.
