I looking to buy sound card for my home studio
and I dont know what geer to pick

I am thinking of buying interface sound card like Edirol FA 101 or the Edirol DA 2496 or the Echo Layla 3G
and to use it without mixer
or another possibility is to buy less expensive sound card
like the Echo Layla 24/96 or MAudio Omni that have digital input and have less inputs
and buy mixer like the Mackie-1402 VLZ or the Alesis Multimix 16

my qustion is what of this two ways to pick
thanks

My own preferrence is to have the pres seperate from the interface.

It makes life easier when one thing develops a fault and you're only missing out on that one link as opposed to the whole shebang being useless.

It also means that aside from your mixer you can add a few standalone pres and this will give you many more options sound wise.

A good point made by Gordone recently was that gear made to do just one thing will often do that one thing better than the respective parts on the all singing all dancing units. I'm sure that's not always the case but it's a good general rule of thumb.

but if i am buying just interface with pres and more then 4 inputs
when il record drums it will be in seprated lines like one that is snare and one that is kick
that way is much easier to do the balance
thats why i am dont know which one to take

Hmmm, I'm not sure I understood your 1st post.

All of the interfaces you've mentioned are multi input. How many inputs do you need?

The omni interfaces with the Delta 44 or 66. The others all have 8 analog inputs as far as I can gather.

All but the Layla 24/96 have a couple of built in pres as well so if you're wanting to record many sources simultaneously you will need more preamps anyway. This is where a mixer could come in or you could use a few standalone pres.

I'm not sure what you think the differences are between the two groups of interfaces you mentioned?

if i will buy sound card like the Edirol FA 101 or the Edirol DA 2496 that have pres
and have 8 inputs
why would i need a mixer?

so my qustion is if to buy expensive sound card with at least 4 inputs or to buy less expensive sound card without pres and to add to this a mixer that have pres

Hey no worries, your English is a lot better than my Arabic :D.

The two interfaces you mentioned do have 8 inputs but only have microphone preamps on 2 of those inputs. The others are line level inputs that will need additional preamps if you want to put mics through them.

So if you wanted to use all 8 inputs at the same time (with mics) on either of those interfaces you would still need another six preamps.

So you could buy a mixer with at least six preamps (although most have either 4 or 8) or you could buy standalone preamps.

so i can buy cheap interface with digital input
and to buy good mixer
(when i say cheap i mean sound card less expensive then the edirol fa 101
or the layla 3g 24/96)
this is more preferable?
thank you for your replies
