hey ya'll, i'm new to this site and just bought my first 4-track (zoom mrs-4) and was reading the manual with the machine on when i realized it'd moved on to song 2 and i hadn't pressed record yet. sorry if this is a stupid question, but i don't wanna waste space on the mini disk. does the machine really think i laid something down? and if so, can i get back into song one and fix it, rather than waste a song on tuning or whatever it heard me do? or does just having it on, use up space on the disk? je suis tres confused. can anyone help? thanks, flo

There's a demo song on the card that comes with the zoom, so when you fire up the machine it will go to song 2 if you select a new song to record. The demo tune can just be deleted to free up space.

In any event, the card that ships with the zoom is only 32 mb, which is practically useless. You'll want to get a 128 mb card. Also, a card reader is a good idea, as it will allow you to backup to your computer and do other things as well. Card reader software is available for download at Zoom's japanese site.

thanks so much :) the 32 is useless cuz it's just not much room? or for some other reason? sorry, i don't know much about this stuff...

Yo go with the Flo:

Space is the answer. In other words, the 32 doesn't give you much time to record. Hence the suggestion to upgrade to the 128.

Yeah, sorry, I should have been more specific. With a 32MB card, you'll probably only be able to fit one song, depending on the number of tracks you use.

With a 128 mb card, again depending on the number of tracks you use, you can fit maybe 3 to 5 songs. You can back up your songs to your computer using a card reader, that way you can delete songs on the card and record more songs.

The Zoom does not let you name songs, so its probably a good thing that you can't store a hundred songs on one card. When I backup a card, I use winzip to put all the songs in one archive file and include a text file of the song names that are on the backup file. Then I move the archive file to a CD-RW disc.

thanks so much - i had no idea the 32 held so little! we don't have a mars in dc - is there a good place to big up bigger disks?

Some places where you should be able to get a 128MB smartmedia card include Circuit City, OfficeMax, Staples, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart. You can also buy online if necessary from Musicians Friend, AMS, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.
