I have a dell inspiron laptop (2.3GHz, 70G HD, uncertain speed, 1 G RAM, and I believe a SB live card) and I am looking at getting the presonus firepod as an input device. Do I need to update my sound card as well or does the device function as a soundcard? Flame away, I know this is probably stupid but utterly suck with computers.

Yes, it is a soundcard, and it will kick the ass of the soundcard that came with your computer.

Sorry, not in the mood to flame today. :D

Thanks

Heheh, Thanks man... Do you think the firepod is the way to go or is there another firewire or USB based i/o device that is looking good for a similar price?
thanks again

Don't really know (I'm using a desktop machine), but I would advise against USB for audio. I've read here and elsewhere that it's not as quick, and some people have had problems with it.

i second that!

firewire or pcmcia ...

not usb 1 or usb 2 ...

Just remember, usb, is a good abbreviation for, unsatisfactory sound bits.

Here are some other FireWire interface options.
I use a MOTU 828mkII .... I love it. Works great with my laptop and just as well with my rackmount PC.

When it comes to daisychaining Firewire Interfaces (the firepod says it will...but the people there say they are working on drivers for it for 16 mic pres, 24 mic pres plus the spif io) does it depend on the computer or can it max out on itself? I would see myself using 16 channels of mic pres max plus a spdif preamp or something as well especially to the firepod. I was just wondering if this is feasable for firewire...

shawn with respect you need to understand computers more in depth.
a plain jane laptop will have a lot of trouble recording 24 tracks at once imho while playing back lots of tracks.
i might consider it with an amd64 laptop but only when ive put it through its paces. i think its going to take another iteration of laptop technology before its smoother sailing.

Point well taken manning1,

My friend wan unhappy with power of G4 Powerbook so he switched for latest HP AMD64, it was 3 days with me and there was something strange going on, I know this thing is capable of recording serious amount of track at once, but something is wrong here, then I switched my moving 2.5" HD latest from Hitachi and no less but 7200rpm (not common for 2.5") anyway, improvement in speed but still something is missing?

Then I said lets put another 512MB RAM, now finally things started to work with decent effects.

But as you said another or perhaps even two cycles are needed for laptops to really catch up with such power.
