Inserts be definitionb are in/out allowing you to "insert" a separate source to the signal chain. If your mixer has an "in" and an "out", you can indeed use the out as a direct out, pre-channel usually. If you only have one "insert" it is always a TRS connection (tip, ring, sleeve) which allows in and out from the same connector to a Y plug. Did that make sense?

kinda so like i can run cables from the channel inserts into an interface?? like each channel has xlr in 1/4 in and then insert (trs) ?? can i do it

Yes, you can run individual channel outs from the insert points. If you plug in a 1/4 plug just to the first indent, not all the way in, that will send whatever signal is present at the channel in, out to your interface.
If your mixer has bus channnels, you can also send out from them to your interface. This is probably the most common method used because it allows you to use the channel gain, EQ, and FX returns prior to going to hard drive.

Direct outs are usually labelled as such, or at least 'out'.

If you had a pic that you could post, that would help. If not, what kind of mixer (brand and model #) is it. I'll see if I can find it online.
