On the Yamaha boards, can the inserts be plugged in half way to get direct out pre-fader with breaking the signal path? I know I can do this on other boards, but I'll be using a house sound board Friday night and would like to make sure this will work before I get there.

I think the board is an MG32/14fx

Thanks,

Ouch a MG series huh. Yeah if it's an insert you can go into it to the first click to get a direct out.
Are you going to record?

You can do that with any TRS insert, but not all of them have a ring contact that has enough spring to hold a plug. A batch of "insert tap" cables might be safer. I think you can buy them. You can make them by putting TRS plugs on one end of a guitar/patch cable and wiring tip and ring together. Then they won't pop out or get pushed in and interrupt the signal to the mixer.

Yes, I'm planning to record. Their house sound guy just said it was a 32 channel analog Yamaha - so it may be a bit different than what I came across first. I grabbed the pdf manual for the above mixing board just so I could get a sense of how Yamaha does things - I'm pretty used to Carvin and Behringer, and even Mackie boards are set up quite a bit different.

I thought you could do that with any TRS insert, but it never hurts to confirm - I've made assumptions before! I like the idea of making the tap cables, but I don't think I'll have that done by Friday night. Long term, I think I'd like to get a short snake (3m?) and wire 1/4' insert taps on one end, and XLR (or even a combination of XLR, 1/4, and RCA) on the other end. I already have a 4 channel insert snake with tip/ring pairs on the other end; this would just complement that, until I'm running more than the 4 vocal mics through compressor/gate/limiters.

Thanks for the quick answers - I heart this group!
