how do i do it? LOL:D :D :D

im running sonar 2 XL, and a delta 1010 and want to try to do midi drums rather than use my DR-770 drum machine. i know how to hook up the midi cables to the delta from the DR-770, but think that i may not need to because im using XL. is this correct? i would need an every step of the way explanation with this. never done it before. NEVER.... please explain it to me like im a 7 year old:confused:

mucho appreciato!!!

...Yo, spacedye. So you want make the MIDI beat with SONAR, right? well, 1rst of all, SONAR (whether XL or older) isn't actually Drums machine. But it can act like one, conjunction with your MIDI devices. However, if you don't have any MIDI devices, you can take an advantage of DXi. Here you go...

1. Open up new project. insert a MIDI track.
2. Click Insert --> DXi synth --> DR-008DXi2 (for example). Here you should see insert DXi Synth Options. Click okay.
3. Click View --> Synth Rack. Click the device, Properties. It'll open drum pad layout of the synth. Now, click Load --> Load Settings. Pick one of those preset, lets say... Smart Loops Dry Studio kit.dr8. Can you do that ? good. Now the layout contains several sound on the pad. Click the pad to hear the sound...
4. Now, close all the windows and back to Track View. Click the MIDI track, and point the Output port to DR-008.
5. Open the piano roll view, and insert the notes as usual...

Comeback if you have any difficulty.

hey there...

hey, thanks for taking this task on.
ok, i did all the steps you wrote. but im a bit stuck on the "and insert the notes as usual... " part.
im not sure about inserting notes as usual because ive never had to "insert" notes before. i just play them on a guitar or a piano.
anyhow, a few "notes" or "midi instructions" appeared in the dr-008 track. but when i press play, i hear nothing. silly question time-no midi cables have to be connected because my midi "instrument" is in the sonar program, correct?

...that's why I said SONAR ain't exactly drums machine that will generate any beat instantly. You need to put note by note and sequence 'em, make a drum patern to do the beat. It somehow won't play like Band In A Box which lets you choose the style, and it will play the beat. You have to either draw the notes in piano roll view, or record your performance via external MIDI controller (eg. keyboards, drums pad, etc.). :).

but when i press play, i hear nothing.

Click the button next to reset to run the audio engine... Voila... :D
