Just to be 100% sure, could someone clarify for me that to run MIDI through a recording interface to my computer that I will need two midi cables? I already have one, but I just want to be sure that I do need another.

Don't see why you would need a second.

Instrument -> MIDI cable -> interface -> USB (or Firewire or whatever) -> Computer

You only need a second one if you need the computer to send Midi data back... say .... if you have an external synthisizer or MPC.

Ah, Thank you. The little chain you made via text really helped me out. Thank you.

right on. Thanks, man. I recognize your name from lurking around the ableton forums. I should post more there.

So... Do you have an external synth? Because tlennon1 is right. You would need a second cord for that.

No, I do not. I have a midi controller... that doesn't seem to want to turn on.

The Midi cable should be connected to the midi controllers OUT, and the other end of the cable should be plugged into the IN of the recording interface, right...?

You don't need any MIDI cables to run MIDI through a recording interface to your computer. MIDI is just code and it can be passed through MIDI cables (one way) or two way (in and out) through a USB cable.

So hook a USB cable from your interface to your computer and another USB cable from your keyboard to our computer and you're good to go. No MIDI cables.

The only time you need MIDI cables is if you want to interface some older, pre-USB gear (that only has MIDI jacks and no USB jack) with your system.

Assuming that his MIDI controller has USB.

Which controller are you using?

Which controller?

Axiom 61

It turns on, but ever since a few days ago (after my comp had a little virus) the dialog that was once in the blue led area of the controller no longer shows. The Blue light comes on and is clearly visible, but no text. Also, it's no longer being recognized by my computer. This is frustrating.

Is there anything I could have done to screw the controller up? Also, I'll note that two of the buttons on the controller quickly flash when turned on (Zone/Group & Nut - Not sure if this helps)

Thank you for clarifying. I'm more of a noobasaurus than I thought.

Axiom 61, yes sir, it does. :)

I just bought the M-Audio Midisport to hook a couple of things up.
$30 very well spent.

Hmmm. I'll look into this.

I'm using it to interface the Korg D3200 as a control surface with Cubase.
Pretty exciting week for me.
Many Korg owners don't seem to realize you can do this.
