Quick midi help

For years i've always used a midi chain but the chain now seems to be getting too long. CAn anyone please tell me what I need to get so I don't use a chain. Hopefully the most cost effective method please. I've heard of midi thrus and boxes, etc. I really don't know which I need. For info, I have about 8 midi devices.
 
DonF, are you able to tell me what a midi patch bay is please? I thought that was what I required, but it seems this gizmo you just suggested should do the trick
 
A MIDI patch bay allows you to plug your MIDI controllers into the inputs, and your instruments into the outputs. Then you can route inputs to outputs as necessary without ever unplugging anything.

That's exactly what the box I mentioned appears to do. I don't have one, but I certainly would consider it if I needed such a thing.
