okay, there isnt that much urgency, I just had a sudden thought:
The tascam us-1800 - does it have built in pre-amps? if not do they matter that much because it says something about gain and stuff but I'm just getting confused.
thanks

Wow: Really?

No offense intended, but I'd recommend reading a few of the stickys around here.
I duno why but I figured you knew this stuff.

In short, yes it has mic preamps.
It's generally accepted that XLR inputs (3 pins) on an interface will mean there are microphone preamps.

It is important because the difference between mic/line/DI is not just the type of connector used.
They are all designed to accept different voltages, or levels of signal, and different impedances.

Usually a line input will not have a gain knob, as line level is a standard accepted level. (there's more to this but it doesn't matter for now)
Mic inputs will have gain controls because the source signal and microphone output can vary greatly, meaning you may or may not want to amplify it a lot.
Imagine you use two identical mics on a cab. One an inch away, and one ten feet away.
You'll want to be able to discriminate in gain between the two, see?

A microphone plugged into a line input socket will not be good, and vice versa.

Hope that helps.

you know I used to put things like "I'm a newbie so correct me if I'm wrong" on all my posts, then I started to stop because I thought I had a grip of most concepts but maybe I should go back ahaaa ;)
thanks for answering though, I understand phantom power but I just didnt realise a preamp would be that simple considering that you can get whole seperate consoles.
