Just curious about this...I know in the manual it states, do not plug in a single ended (unbalanced) mic or instrument into the mic in jacks when phantom power is on...well I was doing a session with a few guys today, one of which I thought knew the mixer well...and I had to run out for a minute and let him control it. Well, during the session he had pulled out the XLR cable and put it back in a few times because one of the artists vocals needed the mic gain to be ridiculously loud so it was causing feedback on the speakers. I'm just curious as to whether this will or has caused damaged to the channel in which the xlr cable was plugged back in with the phantom power still on...

Since you said he plugged an XLR cable in/out, a reasonable assumption would be that the microphone used had a balanced output. If that is true, you should be fine-unless the microphone cable itself is defective (unlikely). It's still risky to take that chance though, especially if this becomes a habit.

Just curious...
Are you tracking "live"?

Because if you have the singer use headphones instead, they could simply adjust their headphone mix without changing the level on the microphone, thereby eliminating feedback.

thanks for the response. I am still fairly new to the home-recording scene as you can tell and I was bitin my nails when I saw him almost do it again. I only have one set of headphones here which the singer is using, but usually we have a second pair around. Today, however, we didn't. I really need to buy another pair, but being a college student, I can only purchase more additions little by little. =/ Heh, just bought some Yorkville YSM1s and a power amp and have been ecstatic since, lol.

For my 1402 I used one of those Dual input 1/4" stereo plugs for 2 phones.
Are you putting the singer in a different room? Try it if you are not. It will make a world of difference!

Not to worry. Too much anyways. :D

I would assume that any damage that could ensue would be dependant on the mics/sources that you were using. Many times I have accidentaly plugged or unplugged mics with phantom power on, so far no damage.
