I checked out the thread you sent me too and it one recommendation there was the GAP pre-73. I took a look at in and it looked pretty solid. It seems to be, like the Studio V3, an one mic preamp. I watched video review by the same guy on both, showing both being used in various situations and I think their not too far away from each other. Take a listen:

Obviously there is a level of difference as the GAP is worth five time the V3, but I've heard that replacing the cheap china-made tube inside with another inexpensive GE or Tesla tube makes it even better. With that in mind I think the V3 seems like one of the better options for my first preamp considering all of the variables here. What do you think?

Personally, I'd go for at least two channels. When I bought the 2 channel Behringer, I remember there was a one mic version but I passed on that. I'm glad I did. If only for recording acoustics sometimes and drums and various percussion.

I just found a nice pre for around $155 made also by ART. It's the "Art Pro Channel Microphone Preamp Compressor and EQ Channel Strip". How can I tell how many inputs this pre has? I couldn't find it on the webpage.
It looks like just the one. When describing the ART TPS, they specify that it has two channels which they don't do with the ART pro channel strip.
I don't want to sway you with what might be bad advice. I'm just saying that I'd personally go for at least two.

You seem to be right. I saw the ART TPS and it looks nice. That along with the Behringer Ultragain you mentioned earlier and the ART Pro VLA II 2 Channel Vactrol-Based Compressor pre. The latter seems like the nicest, but it is the highest in price :(
