Okay, so I have a 308 that I just got in perfect shape that I am going to run into a Fostex R8 and a Tascam 238. First off, has anyone done the 308 into a 238 and had good results. They are both great pieces of equipment, so, I am excited to see how it sounds. Second I have the 238 with dbx rather than the 238S with dolby S. Does anyone with experience have an opinion about whether it would be worth getting an 8 channel Dolby S unit to run between them rather than using the built in dbx? Will this really do much. I believe the R8 has dolby, so I could always use it as an intermediary and just run from the 308 to the R8 and monitor into the 238 using the R8's dolby. Or, I could buy an independent unit but I don't want to buy it if it isn't going to make a noticeable difference over using the dolby in the R8.

Opinions?

Thanks,
ryan

The Dolby S chip in the 238S was prone to failure. You're not missing anything. dbx is plenty good for an 8-track cassette.

I have the 238 with dbx and a 308 also. I recommend spending your money on a signal generator and an RMS voltmeter to calibrate this setup instead of buying more NR. Calibrating according to the instructions in the 308 manual before you record will make more of a difference.
