My friend and I are looking to start doing some more recording. The only problem is the room. We did stuff in his basement and in a basement of a church. Neither one is a real optimum recording studio. The problem is, neither one of us plan on staying around where we live for more than 6 months, and we don't want people coming over. The people I live with don't like metalheads, and my friend has a baby and doesn't want a lot of noise. We mostly been going to bands' practice areas to record. There is a lot of different foam options from Musician's Friend. There is that designer set that comes in colors, ridge/wedge foam, eggcrate, and corner things. We were looking at that set/kit thing that was the corner things and sheets. We want something that we can take with us easily to treat rooms so they aren't so bad. We're not looking for perfection, but something better than that basement sound that isn't permanent. Would that foam be a good option for us?

This is what we were looking at

Mate - what you get for your $299 is 64 sqft of treatment or basically 2 - 8' x 4' (64 sq ft) sheets of absorption.

Check out this product

ring them and compare the cost. I think you'll find the latter is much cheaper - yet a superior product for what you need.

this stuff is rigid so the sheet will stand up on their own so you can just lean them up against your walls - get as many as you can afford.

Also try Owens-Corning 703 (2 inch) rigid or Knauf 2 inch rigid (3 pound) fiberglass panels. Call a local insulation distributor. You can probably forget Home Depot or Lowes.

Where do you get this stuff from? Also, how much am I going to need? I don't need to cover the whole room, right, just two walls and some in the corners?

You can get it from commercial insulation sellers. Call up Owens Corning and they can tell you who sells it in your area. I got about 25 sheets of 1 1/2" 2'x'4 for $200 and it was plenty for my 16'x31' room. It's best to build a wood frame for them to make it easier to hang and to give it a little space between the insulation and the wall. If you put up the 2x4 sheets with about a foot in between each one you will have a very dead sounding room.
