LOGIC ABUSER
You know, I actually thought of a question for a change.
Turning off virtual memory. What kind of problems or advantages does this pose?
I thought I remember hearing something about this in reference to my Logic Audio. Always been a little....scared....to try it.
Got 256mb ram

i'd think problems.

on pcrrecording.com or somethin like that....it says designate space on your HD yourself for the Virtual memory however, instead of letting windows determine it. I think it was like for 200 + MB of ram, designate at least 256MB of hard disk space on that little drop down menu thing there..

Alrighty then.........looks like the answer is NO.....thx slack

I did a bunch of crap like that to a K6200 i was trying to bleed performance out of...needless to say i fried it, and i mean toast......

good news:it was under warranty and replaced with a 500mhz celeron (even if it was a crappy HPPavillion)

Man that's a nice trade up gidge!

I hate it when shit breaks, but then there's always that chance that you'll get something BETTER in return. I've gotten bigger hard drives many times via warranty returns!

...in fact, it's tempting to take an old drive that's at the end of it's three year warranty and just shake it around a little bit.... :)

Gidge, how did you fry your processor? I have a K6-2 500 and I don't let windows manage the virtual memory. I was told to set the virtual mem to 2.5 times the amount of ram in the system and defrag on a regular basis. I have done that. Now, I do have problems with my system, but I think it is a power supply and/or cooling problem.

Slack, why is it not a good idea? DO you mean don't turn off virtual memory or don't take the management control from windows?

I meant DISABLING it. If you want to fix the size of your virtual memory, that's usually no big deal. Doesn't really do anything for performance though, but it's not a horrible idea.

i have no clue how i did it..i know i had several articles about optimixing your pc for digital audio and optimizing your hard drive and optimizing this and that and at this point i had no clue what i was doing.....it just got ot the point where you hit the power button, hear the hard drive spin at about 80db, and then nada.......
