hi guys,

does anyone know if the following is possible?

Basically, I want to record my guitar and vocals over tracks. Is it possible to

A - record over a midi file - if so how? NOT to use as a backing track, but actually to record it into a studio/package and then play guitar/vocals over

Thanks

if it wasn't possible this whole forum would be kind of pointless.

Record the midi into your DAW (like Reaper)
then play it back and record your guitar and vocals
- the midi file has to be assigned to a VST and it will be a backing track that is playing while you sing and shred on your axe :p

if you don't know what DAW and VST mean then read more threads...

You want to record your guitar and vocals WITH tracks... not over them....

Get the picture? It's called multi-track recording and it's what everyone here does. Do some reading... ask some questions...

And watch lots of Po...Oh wait, that may be the problem. Winnie The Pooh can really take time away from learning. :)

Mate - its a simple question, if i knew the answers I wouldnt post. Thanks for replying.

Basically, I struggle with the drum tracks to create myself, and would prefer a downloadable midi file, which I can then load in as a track and then lay vocals and guitar over it.

So - this is possible? Can anyone expand for me? If needed, I can tell you what studio I have etc.

Thanks a lot

I already answered your question in the first reply. If you need more information after trying the answer then you should ask a more specific follow up question.

You've got a studio!

Yup, it's entirely possible. That's exactly what most of the folks here do. Any of the common software programmes you see mentioned in here will do it. More normally, people will record their own MIDI tracks from a keyboard but if you have an existing one, that can work too.

Basically the process is to put each element into a separate track. Then you tweak things like equalisation, add reverbs if you want, adjust levels so everything matches nicely--then mix it all together into a finished product.

Those who posted before are right--this forum has some great FAQs and guides giving excellent suggestions for everything about what gear to buy, how to use it and lots of reading suggestions to give you the background that will help you do this well.

Beyond this general stuff though, it's much easier to answer specific queries once you get going. Until you get down to the nitty gritty, the FAQs referred to are the best introduction.

I wasn't having a go at you.... I can if you like?

Read the other 500 threads asking exactly the same question and you'll answer your own question... or perhaps someone else will feel like typing it all out again for you... but it's not looking like it.

Chill.

Armistice is totally right here man. Many of us here will help you, but you must make the effort to find out, at least the basic information yourself. You would not ask a structural engineer if a hammer was good for putting in screws. Educate yourself a bit and we will help you answer the tough questions. :D

HI mate.

Wasnt referring to you, and thanks for replying.

I was thinking of using cakewalk, ever used it?

Ive basically done a bit of recording, just with guitar backing and then laid over it, with some vocals, bass and lead. but ive only once used a pre-programmed drum beat.

So, what i wanted to do was to as you say, use a midi file, isloate the tracks, then lay down guitar and vocals over it. Just wondered if poss, which I gather now is :-) and which software was recommended to do it?

What software were you using to record before? And what were you using that one time that you used a pre-programmed drum beat?

There is lots of software that contains MIDI sequencers, some of it will cost some coin, some less so. There is a Cakewalk specific forum on here if you want to know more about it. You can find copious info here about various multitracking/MIDI sequencing software programs.

Hey

No its cool, appreciate your time. Just read your intro to midi. I should have put a bit more in. I have a Korg portable studio, and was using the pre-programmed beats etc. I can lay down tracks, mix them down, bounce, no problem. I just was under the impression you couldnt split the Midi files and upload them into a track to use, that was all. Even when I google these programs cakewalk, protools, and cubase, I dont see any mention that you can edit midis like that. I presumed you could only edit midis that either you create yourself or ones that were pre-programmed.
Does that make more sense?
