Hey all,

So I'm about ready to order the final elements for my home recording studio and I plan to set everything up in a week or two. However, I have a major concern. Everyone smokes in my apartment. The equipment will be in my room where nobody smokes, but the next room over constantly has people smoking in it. Should I be concerned about this? I'm guessing the toxins in tobacco and cigs can't be too good for the equipment.... If I'm in trouble, any suggestions? Anything you guys use to help keep your recording space smoke free?
 
I imagine tobacco smoke is a bit of a no go for condenser microphones, but if they're in a non-smoking room, then the peripheral damage would be nil to slight... same goes with everything else - it would be the microphones I'd be most concerned about.

Sorry man...I'm not laughing at you...I'm lauging at the irony.
I think you got more to worry about than the equipment. :(

(I use to smoke, many years ago...so I've been there)
 
Smoking is not particularly healthy for those who partake.

Sidestream smoke, though it receives considerable attention from people wanting smoke-free zones, is not nearly as dangerous as it is made out to be. Other air-borne popllutants overwhelm the effects of side-stream smoke.

The risk to mikes (and yourself) is particulate matter . . . air-borne particles of dust, carbon and other matter.

The nastiest thing (and often the more irritating thing) about tobacco smoke is the smell.
 
Does the apartment have a forced air heater/ac unit?? The kind with a fan?/ If so, it has an intake air filter and it is probably located at a central point in the apartment, maybe near the living room. You can buy a higher quality filter that might (hopefully) capture the smoke before sending the air throughout the rest of the apartment.

Also, try to keep the dor closed as much as possible.
 
yeah, I've cut on the habit a lot over the past year, but I still really enjoy smoking hookah...so damn relaxing.
 
yeah we have central ac/heating....has a fan so I'm sure you're right...somehow I didn't think about that! thanks.
 
Along with the previous suggestions store your mics in freezer bags with dessicant in Tupperware or similar storage solutions.

So true!
When I use to smoke, I never noticed...but after I stopped, MAN! :eek: I noticed how bad the stink was on people that smoked.
Now I could smell a smoker from 30 feet away...it's such a foul smell that sticks to your clothes, hair and breath...I finally understood why my girlfriends at the time who didn't smoke, use to pull back at times. :D

But yeah...it's enjoyable to the smoker... ;)

Not to preach...but you and your roommates need to quit ASAP...no matter how "enjoyable" it seems, you're poisoning yourselves.
My father died from lung cancer/smoking 6 years ago. I quit 15 years ago...best thing I ever did, so glad I got that monkey off my back.
 
Keep the door closed. There's a single smoker in this household, but there's 80' of trailer between most of that activity and me most of the time. There is a noticeable difference between rooms IME. But things still get dusty a lot quicker than they ever did when I lived in an apartment by myself as a non-smoker. It was interesting growing up, using 409 to turn the orange walls semi-white again. And various Army facilities that were legacy buildings from WWII with a fair bit of orange grime on everything. For that stuff that couldn't be painted over with 20 layers of paint.
 
I have some older rack mount gear,microphones and consoles that went through about 20 years of bar slug and cigarette smoke. They all still work but they will never be the same.

Agreed, but what I have not noticed anyone mention is that cigarette smoke is just downright BAD for electronics. Smoke carries microscopic particles and basically is a very fine dust that can and will get into your electronics. Even if you are in a different room, smoke (though not as much) will find its way to your electronics. Electronics get hot, dust insulates the heat which in the game of keeping your electronics cool, is very bad. Another thing to remember is that cigarette smoke is not "dry" it also contains moisture. So not only are you getting fine dust into your electronics, but your also getting a little bit of moisture in there as well. Then lastely, you have the aesthetic issues of smoking around electronics in that smoke causes discoloration.

And yeah, it's bad for humans too ;)
 
The tar in smoke is probably not good for microphone diaphragms, but it's probably worse for peoples lungs

Start smoking now, and smoke way more than everyone else. Through your selfless act of self-destruction, others will see the futility of their bad habits, quit smoking, and thank you for helping them focus on the important things in life.
