hi there. my names Dave, from London in the UK. I am considering buying the studio projects B1 microphone due to all the good opinions on it from this site (which is an awesome site, by the way).
However, my question is this..can i just take the mic and plug it in straight away, or do i need phantom power for it. if so, what kind of unit do i need, and how expensive are they. and lastly, what kind of jack does the mic have. is it and XLR jack or a normal 3/4 jack or whatever its called.
many thanks in advance for any help.
cheers

DAVE (UK)

You need phantom power (most mixers or good pre-amps have a switch to turn it on). They run about $99 bucks here in the U.S (sometimes a bit less if they are on sale). It has a regular XLR connection...

All condenser microphones need phantom power. One or two (usually electret) mics can be powered by battery, but they aren't usually very good mics (e.g. AKG C1000).

Phantom normally comes from your mic preamp, mixer or your computer's audio interface, depending on your setup. What other equipment do you already have?

Phantom almost always is sent via XLR connectors for safety reasons. The B1, like just about every real mic made in the last 20-30 years, has an XLR socket that you use to connect to an XLR input on your preamp/mixer/sound interface.

Hope that helps, if you want some pointers towards where the best UK prices can be had, send me an email or PM (I'm in Leeds).

It sounds like you're pretty new to some of these concepts. There's a lot to learn about microphones and how to use them. The FAQ for this forum would be a good place to start:

thanks for the advice guys. Noisedude, i have emailed you.
so basically, i am going to need to buy this mic along with a separate phantom power supply, as i am using my fostex mr8 to record stuff with. this is good, because it has XLR inputs. now i just need to work out which power supply to get,,lol.

thanks again.
