question regarding mixdown

i just recorded two tracks with cakewalk..one guitar and some mandalin in the background..i use the volume in cakewalk to make the guitar a little louder..guitar is a 6.0 and the mand is 3.0 it sounds good with cakewalk but when i mixdown ands turn it to an mp3..the mandalin is a lot louder than the guitar and both are quiet as hell is there any way to make them louder???
 
How about bouncing the mix to a track, see if the balance problem is there at that point. The volume would seem to be a seperate issue. Does the mix peak near zero?
If you do the mix track within the project, make sure when you play it back to evaluate that the master fader is at zero and any effects on the master are off so you have a straight clean playback (or just use a new clean buss).
