How exactly do I use a preamp for some monitors that I'm eventually gonna buy. I have a stereo receiver/amplifier. Is that enough to run monitors off of?

Your PC acts as a preamp. You could run the soundcard out to the Onkyo through an aux input, then hook up PASSIVE monitors to the Onkyo. If you get active monitors, you just go straight from the PC to the monitors.
