question on preamps

In a few weeks, I'm going to be recording a small project for a college group. It's acappella, so it's all vocals and I had a question about preamps.

I'm going to be using an AKG C4000B and I was just wondering how much of a factor the preamp is going to be. I have a crappy Behringer 802 mixer that I'll be using to power the C4000. Will the not so great preamps negate the good qualities of the C4000?

Any suggestions on preamps or phantom power supplies that I could use? I'm on an extremely tight budget, so please keep that in mind.

Thanks,
Clazymike

I'd find me a tube preamp with a built-in compressor.

Tube... for the warm sound.

Compressor... because you're doing multiple voices, and it's for sure that one or more of the crooners will try to "out-sing" the others.

EQ capabilities would be nice, too... but now we're getting up there in options, and more importantly... cost.

Suggestions?

if its an important project, rent some killer equipment (pres, compressors) and save the Behringer for playing around....

Let's pretend that I already have an appropriate compressor and eq...

All I need is a preamp with phantom power to power the condensor. No comps or eqs needed.

And also pretend... well, no, I really don't have 1745AUS (but thanks for the suggestion anyway trebles!)

My main question is: will the Behringer significantly degrade the sound coming from the mic?

i dislike asking this question because i never like being asked it myself as i dont believe a fixed dollar level is always the answer but for what you want to do what are you wanting to spend tops and how many chans do you require to get the job done?

I have an 802, and I think the Behringer will work ok. I'd save my cash until I could afford something in the $500 range--as a matter of fact, that's exactly what I did.

you could always get a presonus mp20 with 2 chans @499 if you didnt want the pre with 8 as above thats also another option

or the art pro mpa @ 439 again 2 chans and not a bad unit at all for this price @8th street if you needed more chans i still dont think my 8 chan sugestion is a bad deal at all and wait till you check the price on them too well under 200 usd 129usd if i remember right if not someone correct me here

Word has it that Behringers kinda' suck. :) Get a Mackie VLZ. Preamps on those are fine for what you're trying to do.

I'm definatly not a Behringer fan but if that's all you have, that's all yoiu have. It'll work OK. We're taking things to a fine point here when we talk about the virtues of various mic pre's and there IS a difference. That being said, it'll work for you and no, it won't sound like you threw a towel over the mic. Go for it.

That being said, I have a quick question about phantom power.

If I hook up a condensor, like the AKG 4000 to the mixer to utilize the phantom power, am I able to hook up a dynamic mic to the mixer on a different channel at the same time, like an SM58? Or if I use the phantom power do I have to have all condensors on that?

No problemo. As long as the XLR cables are wired correctly (pin#1=shield, pin#2=hot, pin#3=return) it will not damage or affect a dynamic mic like a 58. And it isn't present at all on line inputs of other channels.
Happy tracking.
