Hi I have a Presonus Firebox. I also have a M-audio DMP3. (but it's currently not with me)
I am currently using the Firebox's preamps for my mic vocals, but am wondering if it the quality could be further improved.
Will plugging the DMP3 into the line inputs help?

What if I get another preamp like the RNP to plug into the Firebox's line inputs. Will the Firebox's internal circuitry not do the RNP justice?

Thanks.

Using the line inputs will do "as little damage as possible" -- You're still using that piece's internal circuitry, you're still using the converters.

Are the converters a big part of the sound output? What would be a next step up from the Firebox?

To rephrase, are the converters or the preamp a bigger part of the sound?
And is the firebox's converters considered good?

Thanks.

The FB's converters are okay. Don't kick them too hard. Same with most preamps (don't kick them too hard - Recording "as hot as you can without clipping" is ridiculous).

In your case, the preamp is going to give you a more appreciable difference - But as with anything else, the chain is as strong as its weakest link.

Thanks for the reply.
Just curious, what would be a next step up from my Firebox?
