How much do any of you do it with eq or other processing and how much just by using a volume envelope?

Anyone know of a really good reference to learn to get that just right vocal track that's both smooth and cuts through the mix without harsh peakiness?

I'd say vocal is about the most viable candidate for automation- leveling, trimming', global levels right down to the word' or better in some cases.
I like to rough in' with the fader and do pre fader (and insert) gain envelopes on the first few passes.
Then fader automation as the mix settles (generally).

I'll go work your mix some before jumping onto eq then. If it's obvious stuff- and clean-up on the low end etc, sure go for it.
Then maybe look at it as what's covering particularly before you start boosting, and are these tone', volume -even arraignment issues? For example the voc sounds dull', could that be partly top end not needed on other things getting in the way..?

i tend to use 2 mics on vocals alot and i will usually blend one of the tracks as more of a parallel track / compressed a bit harder and i usually put some distortion on it. it can be very subtle or if you want you can drive the heck out of it. i have been digin on the decapitator by sound toys. nice for hardcore and soft ballads and everything in between. i rarely dont filter out the lows. usually cut around 80 to 100 or so. depends on the vocalist. ive fount that if you have a nasaly vocalist rty cutting somewhere in 900 to 2.5 khz
