Question for Roland Fantom XR, X6, X7, X8 owners

Since the Fantom has 1400+ waveforms, are the patches from the JD-990/800 and JV/XP series loadable into the Fantom?

I'm curious if this is the case, cause I will get rid of my JV-1080 and JD-990 in a minute since all my patches are backed up on Sounddiver.

Has anyone actually used the editor that comes with the Fantom? I'm curious to see just how good it is.

The Fantom makes use of an updated synth engine as well as higher quality samples and is not backwards compatible with the JV/XP series. The Fantoms have more in common with the XV series than the JV/XP.

I have an X6. Definitely closer to the XV series sounds. Patches from that series can be converted/loaded using the Roland apps. The X series can load samples into user memory via USB or sneakernet on a memory card, if there's some "must-have" sounds you need. Supports a 512MB expansion onboard (also useful for the 8-track recorder function), though loading data into that space can take a while.

You could probably mock-up the patches from your other boards if you had the time and inclination. There's also another tool that does JV -> XV conversion, that you could then put through the XV -> Fantom converter. Don't know that you'd get consistent results though!

The editor seems easy enough. Haven't used it much myself, as I edit via the Fantom panel. You should be able to download the app for free on the Roland site and open some patch data, if I remember correctly.

Ok, i think i figured it out. he Fantom used the XV series tone generation.

However, this is how it works per roland website:

A. The XV-3080 has 6 main patch banks. A, B, C, D Banks on the XV-3080 (Patches 1-512) are the preset A, B, C, D JV-2080 patches converted to XV synthesis by Roland. Preset D & E on the XV-3080 (patches 513-768) are new to the XV-3080. Total presets: 768

B. The XV-5080's banks a-f (presets 1-768) are from the XV-3080(which is also from the 1080 & 2080), and like i said earlier, presets a-d are from the 2080, and e & f are from the xv-30, bank g is new to the xv-5080 and not in the 3080 bringing the total patches to 896.

C. XV-5050 banks a-g are from the 5080 and bank H is new to the 5050 exclusively.

I thought about buying a xv-5080 until i found on the download page of the fantom products description that roland was too kind and have all of the XV-5050 patches (1024 patches total) in a download that can dump over to the Fantom X. WOO HOO !!! I dont need to buy a XV-5080 anymore. I'm buying the Fantom XR this friday, I already downloaded the XV-5050 patches. So when I get the Fantom, Ill sysex them over and have a 1080, 2080, 3080, 5080 and 5050's patches plus all the new patched from the fantom ... that = 2048 patches !!!!!

PS, in a few more weeks, Im buying a MOTIF ES Rack.

Triton Rack
MOTIF ES Rack
& Fantom XR
JP-8080
JV-1080 fully expanded

again YEAH BABY !!!

Hope this clears up some stuff guys.

So all you Fantom X owners can get all the factory presets from the JV/XP and XV series.

NOTE: they have all been converted to XV synthesis format (JV/XP), they will not accept a sysex dump of your own jv/sp patches.
