I thought I remembered you posted a thread a while back about "siphoning" 48V power. I got some eq modules that require 48V for operation. I was going to test them before I rack them by using phantom power from a preamp. do you think this is possible? I'm not sure how many "amps" a preamp puts out for 48V. If this works, I might end up running them off of an external powersupply that supplies phantom, but will probably end up just building a PSU into the case. Any ideas??

i doubt very seriously that the phantom power circuit in most pre's would have sufficient current to run external devices...

You get 10mA per channel from phantom, not too much. It's possible to design an EQ stage that gets by on 10mA, but I wouldn't count on an existing design using that little.

In fact it's odd for a design to want 48V, an EQ should run on +-15V or less . . .

you would have to float the ground relative to the EQ.... making the 48 the + and the real ground the -... so youl'd end up with essentially +-24 volts for rails... of course then you have to capacitively couple the output since 0 signal would be at +24 volts..... so in short... ya might want to rethink the whole idea....

the eq's are vintage eq's that do in fact run on +48V. I guess I will have to design a PSU for them. Thanks.

you should probably try to overbuild the supply as these EQ's would be class A types and draw a fair amount of current constantly... should also have output trannies...

Hmm....

I'm not sure if they're discrete or not.....there are some components that I can't tell if they are really old opamps or transistors... the eq has a fully parametric mid band so I tend to think they must have ic's in there but I don't really know enough to know if they might actually be discrete. I don't think the modules have output transformers, and have no idea if they are Class A or not.....

ok... well i guess i got sucked in... now ya got me wondering.... have any idea of the manufacture???? how about a schemo????
