Okay, I've finally made the decision to go with a DAW as opposed to a stand-alone multitracker. Now I'm at yet another crossroad. My question is what are the differences between a I/O card such as the Layla, MOTU, Seasound, etc. vs. getting a good digital mixer and a digital interface like the Dio24/96? I'm basically going to be doing solo stuff so I don't really need all the inputs, but I like the idea of having tangible faders and controls. Also, what are some benefits/uses for the 8-channel lightpipe ADAT interface with the latter configuration? Any comments, suggestions, complaints, recommendations, or guidance will be greatly appreciated!

I have the motu 1224 it's great. I had a little trouble installing it at first but eventually got it. Bought it at sweetwater. Those guys educated me very well on it. So I would encourage you to call them and ask ask ask!

welcome, chodd!

Im pretty biased towards what Ive got, but before this thread takes off, whats your price range? You said "good" digital mixer... whats that mean? and are you prepared to spend what it takes for a 24/96 mixer? Do you require that kind of fidelity? do you know what I mean when I say 24/96? and last but not least, do you know that the ADAT interface is LIVING IN THE PAST, BOYS!!! GO TASCAM!!! (PS, read up on TDIF)

opinionatedly yours,
camn
