Hi

Im really new to home recording. I tried to brush up on all the info around here but i need some really basic questions answered.

Well actually only one i guess. What i'd like to know is some decent computer recording equipment you recommend. Im thinking about purchasing a new comp and I'd love to get into doing my own recording. Just some ideas about soundcards. Which are good, which are bad. Im looking to basically do all the instruments myself one at a time. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks

It might help if you include info on what type of system you prefer (Mac or PC), what level of results you're looking for (hobby, prosumer, studio-quality), and what type of budget your dealing with.

There are some basic requirments that make audio recording more feasible such as plenty of RAM (+500mb), a fast processor, 7200 rpm drive speed, plenty of storage space (80-120 gb?), and an external drive for separating audio applications and audio data. It also helps to have room for cards or open USB/Firewire ports and a quiet fan or sound isolation for recording.

On soundcards/interfaces, you need to decide if you will be working with a souncard mounted in the computer or an inteface that stands alone outside the "box" and routes audio via USB or Firewire. Take a look at the options:

Thanks for the help.

Im looking at a PC because my wife hates Mac's. The specs you said for the computer itself is what I was already thinking. Im looking to do recording that are not quite studio but not half assed demos either.

Id like a sound card that definitely has 1/4" I/O. As far as internal or external, what are some recommendations? Does it matter if it's internal or external?

thanks for the link as well. Great help.
