Question about Yamaha 01v and using outboard pres

So, when recording digitally, I use a Yamaha 01v with cubase, via the ADAT i/o connection with a Wavecenter/PCI. This set-up has worked well, as I can record at least 8 separate tracks simultaneously into Cubase, not to mention the 01v makes for a nice control surface.

However, I've been wanting to use outboard pres, and I've been wondering if there is a way to bypass the pres in the 01v, or if merely turning down the gain and padding the channels on the 01v is enough. My concern is that doing the latter would still give me a bit of that 01v pre sound, which isn't always what I want.

I've heard that the pres in the 01v can't be bypassed, so can anyone here back that up? Also, if this is true, could someone recommend a different console where I could do the same thing, but which allows me to bypass its pres? Or should I just use an analog board and use something else after it in the chain for the analog/digital conversion?

I appreciate any comments/suggestions!

I use a Yamaha O1V and outboard pres with Nuendo.

What I do is run the ADAT optical from the 96/52 audio card to banks of 8 channel AD/DA converters. Then the output from the pre goes to the input on the AD/DA convertor.

Not only does that by-pass the pres in the O1V, but it also bypasses the O1V's convertors, which aren't all that great.
The draw back is, you have to have outboard convertors too.

The other way to do it is to turn off the pres on channels 1-6 or channels 7-12.
I doubt you'd be getting any of the flavor of the O1V's pres, but you will be getting its convertors, and any effects you have dialed in.

I basically use my O1V as a control surface only. I run outboard pres and convertors.

I had actually considered getting something like a MOTU (can't remember the model # offhand) which I'm fairly certain allows you to bypass its pres for line-levels. So, I could run the outboard pres into that. Then, once I'm done tracking, I could use the O1v as a control surface for mixing purpases.

But as for turning off the pres on channels 1-6 or 7-12, maybe I'm missing something blatantly obvious here, but how does one do that? I haven't come across anything in the manual that mentions actually bypassing or turning off the pres in the O1v.

Thanks!

My 8 channel Yamaha MLA7 was designed to be an outboard pre for that series of mixers...its a good choice to go with.

There's a little switch on the back that says 1-6 (and 7-12) on/off.

No, actually those are for phantom power. Perhaps the more recent 01v96 gives one the option for switching off the pres as easily as that, but on mine (the original 01v) those switches are for turning on/off the +48V phantom power, required for condenser mics.
