I was wondering if it would be possible to use 2 Alesis iO4s together to get 8 channels. I'm going to be using a Windows computer with Cubase.

Thanks.

You got the correct answer there.

Cubase will allow only one interface (ASIO) driver at a time. As it should be.

So as not to dampen the spirit of experimentation (the life blood of Art!) the correct answer is "Yes!" Just not with Cubase and ASIO drivers.

Download the free Samplitude ProX Silver and use MME drivers. Yes, latency will be high but that does not matter if you are just track grabbing, tape recorder style. Note, the two groups of 4 tracks may not start bang together but Sam makeS it easy to "slide" them up to the start. Mind you, being identical AIs, they might not be that far out.

HOWEVER! I do NOT suggest you buy two such AIs for the purpose nor even buy a second if you already have one! No, far better to just K.I.S.Sir and buy a Tascam US1800.

Dave.

I would have bought the Tascam but these Alesis' are $40 on eBay at the moment.

Well yes fine but have a GOOD look for the 1800, some steals about at the moment. Otherwise, good luck I have done this with a PCI card and two other, different AIs. Mind you only for about 5 mins max after that I would expect them to drift apart.

Might be able to use Reaper?

Dave.

Dave's comment is the reason using 2 interfaces doesn't work - clock drift.

Really? Do you not get the option to choose a common source?
How do apple do it, do you know?

Ah now! I have asked about this elsewhere in the past! Where do USB AIs get their clock from? Many must have a local clock since they can run standalone (e.g. Fast track pro) but that does not mean they might not be synch'ed to a PC?
Pity the AIs in question do not have S/PDIF else OP could slave one from tother.

True multitrack AIs and mixers have multiple converters in them so they MUST have a common clock bus. Can't be beyond the wit of man to make an external sync box/app surely?

I don't know much about it but I always figured it was the kind of thing someone would release a hack for. Maybe they have done and I'm not aware of it?
I mean, if apple can do it (and this isn't a mac vs pc thing) that proves it can be done on a software level.

Maybe there's just something totally different about the drivers per platform that I don't know about.

There is this in Reaper forum...
Integrating multiple ASIO drivers together. - Cockos Confederated Forums

There is the usual interloper that says "just buy an AI with more inputs!" Completely missing the OP's point that he would like to combine non-AI sources such as amplifiers.

Then of course The Great God Latency is trolleyed out as a downside. WHY! Are people so hung up about latency? Only matters if you want to "fx" the signal and hear it back!....peeps did not monitor their B77s off tape!

The thread is dated 2010 and we are still asking!

The clocks are internal to the different interfaces. Aggregate audio device resamples one or more of the digital streams to match the master device.

I think it's a bit of a strange request too - after all, all my software has the option for different connected interfaces, yet NONE of them have any provision for selecting two! So if you could fudge getting two interfaces live - your software couldn't talk to them at the same time.

On my old XP machine with Sony Vegas 6 if I select the Windows Classic Wave Driver I can access all the audio devices on the machine simultaneously: the OEM sound card, a Tascam PCI-822 card and my old M-Audio Mobile Pre USB. I use that driver because I don't need ASIO offers but I do like to be able to switch my DAW's output between my OEM sound card/computer speakers and my Tascam card/home theater system.
