how would i make an analogue mixer my control surface for mixing with tascam DTRS format tapes?

Hmmm.... can you rephrase the question?

An analog console can never be a "control surface" for anything -- it does, however, make an excellent way to route the analog I/O to/from mulitrack recorder, including ADAT, DTRS, or hard disk recorders.

And SMPTE has nothing to do with it in this case....

yea i realized a couple of minutes after posting that is completely assinine. i meant how do i route it so that i send the signal from the tape machines to the desk for mixing purposes, automation, etc...

Ya take yer tape output thingies and hook 'em up to the mixer input thingies. Than ya take the main outs from the mixer and hook it up to some type of recorder thingamabob.

Androbmeda - Does your desk support automation on any level? What mixer do you have?

Normally when you have a console that supports automation, you stripe SMPTE code to one track of your tape and run the automation during playback (perhaps through a SMPTE to midi converter) using the striped time code to queue the desk.

In order to answer your question fully, more information on your setup is needed.

this question is strictly theoretical as of now. i'm going to get a tascam m-3700 automated desk and was thinking of either pairing it with a couple of DTRS tape machines or 24 input digital recorder. anyways, i just wanted to know if the automated features were overkill when recording straight digital or if it would be worth my while to pair up the DTRS machines with the m-3700.

Certainly the automated features are not overkill when mixing from either of those formats. They would only be overkill if you always flew the tracks into the PC for editing (i.e. never used them for mixing).
