i've been learning to sing over the past year and recently have started seeing a vocal coach weekly. My question is, lately after singing my larynx feels slightly tighter than normal. it doesnt hurt, theres no pain or discomfort, it just feels tighter than it normally does. someone told me that its because i've started exercising my vocal cords harder now and that its sortof like when you start lifting weights how your muscles are tense after a workout. one thing i've noticed since i started with a vocal coach is that now i have more presence, as in i'm able to cut through instruments easier when i sing. i wont see my coach next week so i'm not able to ask him about my issue, just wondering if someone else has experienced this and can give me some feedback on it. i'll ask the coach first thing when i see him.

Humm...You will probably keep feeling that tightness. The muscles in you neck will also become quite large. I'd def. tell your teacher about it, but it's most likely not something to worry about at all. Just keep practicing though, once you stop practicing for a long enough time, it will go back to the way it originally was and you'll have to start all over again.

Tension = bad. End of story. If you are doing what he is telling you to do, and you are getting tension where you never had it before, find another teacher.

Tension -> nodes. Bad, bad, bad....

Singing - in any genre - should be relaxed if you want to avoid damage.

I have to agree with Chris.

I've sbeen singing for a long time and did take some lessons - I have not experianced or heard of the type of "muscle tension" you mentioned.

If you've mentioned this to your vocal coach and they simply explain it away as "overused muscles" I would get another opinion, another coach or both.

i'm starting to think the tention isnt in my throat at all, i think its the muscles in my neck around my throat, not sure if its a direct result of singing or not but i will get it checked out.

I would even agree with Chris. i wasn't even thinking about tension. I guess that's what happens when you rush. Thanks for pointing that out Chris.

A27thletter, if you are getting TENSION, you will probably feel some type of pain or will NOT be able to sing as high as you do without tension.

Is this happening to you?

i drink mostly water when singing but i do drink way too much soda, . anyway, the tention is gone for right now. i'll ask my coach about it next week when i see him.

Get off the soda and no caffine. Try apple juice (no added sugar), it will help your larynx.

i've been trying to cut back on it. i need to stop completely.

its ok to have a little tension, is it because youre trying to stretch your range? Also, trying singing with your stomach more than your throat. Another thing is when youre feeling tension whilst sing, turn your head side to side... You probably knew most of that, but i decided id try...
