I feel really dumb for not knowing the answer to my question, but I'll ask anyway. Six years ago my uncle gave me his Aria Pro II as a graduation present. I love the guitar and its tone, but I've always wondered what one of the switches did. There is a small toggle switch beneath the four tone and volume knobs. When the switch is activated my tone improves. I don't think it's an active pick-up switch because I can't find a battery inside the guitar. I don't think it's a phase switch because the tone improves even if I'm only using one pickup. I don't have the guitar with me at the moment, so I can't give the exact serial number, but I'm guessing it's a late 70s/early 80s model. Sorry for the vague info -- I'll post more later after I get home. Thanks.

phase switch

Each of the guitars humbuckers (Aria was the first to use humbuckers when Gibson's patent ran out in the 70s)is really two single coil pickups wired out of phase. The coil tap switch reverses the wiring from out of phase to in phase.I never owned one,but as a manager of a local music store during those days I sure played and sold the shit out of the "poor man's les paul"

Thanks

OK, I don't feel so bad now -- I've never been brave enough to take the pickups apart. I like the tone on this guitar better than some of the recent Les Paul's I've played...

You've got a nice ax, MikeDog -
Do not ever let it gooooooo . . . . . . . . .

Thanks bj -- I don't plan on letting it go. Any guitar that lets me go from a Lennonesque "Get Back" tone to a Gilmouresque "Time" tone is a keeper. I love my guitar like a bassetball...
