Question about Interface + Monitors

I would like to get an interface and studio monitors. I have a MAC with 2Ghz processor and 10.5 OSX. I'd like to be able to use the monitors for applications other than the recording thing.

Is it possible to have monitoring with just an interface that works like hardware monitoring?

I won't need more than 6 - 8 channels, probably ever.

Low end of budget would be 500, high end would be 800 for this gear.

Something like a fire studio project and some KRK 5's might do the trick. I believe the firestudio project should basically replace your sound card. I know for my Firestudio you can get all of the windows sounds if you enable WDM mode (or something like that).

I'd look into monitors a little more though. There are wildly opposing opinions on the KRK's. I think you'll end up spending at least $500 on an interface, so $300 for monitors isn't really that much. Save up if you can and spend a little more.
