question about equiptment

I was listening to a quartet the other night and the bass singer when he talked and sand , seemed to sing in a higher register, but yet he "hit" the low notes...my theory is that they had some kind of unit that lowered his voice and octave to sound deeper than it is, do machine's like that exsist. Also, do those units that keep people on tune work correctly (ie. make the voice still sound natural?)

it sounds like you are talking about a harmonizer. yes they do exist. the can make you sound like the chipmunks or satan.
