I'm new to using effects pedals. I just bought some pedals. I have a chain of about 4 pedals and most of them give you two options for the input and output jacks: mono or another option which isn't given a name (so I'm guessing this is stereo?). I plug my guitar (fender strat) in through the first pedal and the last pedal feeds into my fender deluxe reverb reissue. I'm confused with regards to the whole distinction between mono/single-channel vs. stereo/dual-channel distinction. Should I be running my cable through the mono or stereo jacks in my effects pedals? Sorry, stupid question, I know.

Thanks in advance guys!

If you are using a single cable plugged into an amp you will need to use the mono connections to daisy chain your effects. Usually a pedal which has stereo capability has two output sockets one of which is the left channel and one which is the right channel, one of these will often be marked as the one to use for mono. Basically that means that all of the audio signal content will be available as a single mono output. This is important because stereo effects have variation between the channels which may be subtle but create the impression of stereo which when heard and interpreted by the brain give rise to the spatial positioning of the sound or panning if it applies to an effect. Therefore you might lose something if using the wrong channel as the single mono output. No such thing as a stupid question, just potentially stupid answers.

As said, mono to mono to mono etc. I have used a stereo chorus pedal at the end of a chain and sent the signals to 2 separate amps. At home, or the right venue, it can sound really nice, but in most live situations, it is pretty much useless as the stereo spread is lost agains the rest of the band.
