Question About Drum Overhead Mics

Many here rave about the Octava 012 and the Behringer ECM8000 as drum overheads. My simple question is: if you are using the Octava 012, what capsule do you employ--the cardiod or the omni? I know the Behringers are omni, and that got me wondering.

I use the cardioid capsules on the MC012s for overheads when I want THAT sound. My son uses the Oktavas with cardioids much more than I do - I use the omni Behringers or the Audix TR-40s. When my T.H.E. KP-6M omnis arrive, I'll probably also use them.

Thanks, Harvey. I sure appreciate the response. This whole omni-cardioid thing just has me curious, because I've never used any omni mics. My first thought would be that, unless the drum kit was in its own room, the leakage would be pretty huge using omnis for overheads on drums, right?

I'm not sure what you mean by "that" sound, but I assume you mean sort of the classic approach to a recorded drum kit. Anyway, thank you again for the reply!

The Behringer ECM8000, the Audix TR-40, and the Oktavas each have a "sonic signature". The Behringers and the Audix bring out the high end detail, where the Oktavas add a little "beef" to the overall sound.

Which gets used depends on the sound I'm looking for. Not really classic, just a particular sound that fits the style better.
